Introduction

For 70 years, Dogs’ Homes of Tasmania has provided for the care and welfare of Tasmania’s dogs. We are Tasmania’s largest canine welfare organisation, and every year our Homes in Hobart, Launceston, Burnie and Devonport help around 1,500 lost dogs return home, and around 2000 abandoned or unwanted dogs find new families. Every dog rehomed is temperament tested, given a full health check and desexed, vaccinated and microchipped before being offered for adoption. Other services we provide include: Community and school-based education on responsible pet ownership and safe behaviours around dogs. Foster Care for dogs that require medical or behavioural support before they can be offered for adoption. ‘Pups on Parole’ – a partnership with the Ron Barwick minimum security prison in which a Behaviour Trainer from DHoT works with volunteer carers of dogs from the Home. This highly successful program benefits both dogs and humans. Temporary Crisis Care for dogs whose owners are ill, homeless or otherwise unable to care for them. There is no time limit at our Homes, and we will care for each dog for as long as it takes to find them the right home. We are committed to “Getting to Zero” which means that no healthy, temperamentally sound dog will ever be euthanised.
